As you can imagine there are many different ways for cutting your molding. If this tutorial, we assume that you are simply using a compound miter saw. If you don't want to deal with all of the challenging angle adjustments a simplified method for cutting crown molding is presented in our cutting crown molding with a jig tutorial.
The first thing that you' re going to need to do is measure the length of the walls on which your going to install the crown molding. Measure about 3 inches below the ceiling. Next, it' s not a bad idea to use a true angle finder to ensure that you have the correct angles. One of the biggest problems when installing crown molding on a square wall is that most of the times they really aren' t that square. As a result there can be a big difference in snugness.
After you have the measurements it' s time to begin. Just like the corners and walls may not be square the same goes for the ceiling. Based on the molding that you have chosen the manufacturer will have provided you with the moldings vertical dimension.
The vertical dimension in the above crown molding picture is 3- 1/8" H. Next depending on whether you are using a laser level or snap line there are two different paths that you can take. Go to each corner of the room and measure down 3 1/8". Mark that location with your pencil. Now snap a chalk line from corner to corner or use your laser level and point from one corner to the next. After you have identified the reference line for the base of your crown molding, you will then need to mark the location of the studs. Use your stud finder to indicate the location of the studs. Now that the room has been prepared it is time to install the crown molding. The diagram below indicates the proper method for cutting your molding.
In our photos we have highlighted the wall side of the crown molding in a soft yellow. Adjust the miter and bevel of you saw to match the angle of the wall that you are preparing the molding for. Place the scrap molding on the miter saw with the ceiling side against the fence.
