Installing Wainscotting Decorative Molding Tutorial Part 8 of 9

How to build and install wainscotting constructed from decorative molding

Installing the virtual wainscoting panels

Using a piece of 1x6 scrap wood, cut out a piece of wood that is 6 " long and X" wide. X" just happens to be the space that you've set up between all of the virtual wainscoting frames. If your horizontal and vertical spacing differ then cut one 6" x X" and one 6" by Y" block of wood (spacers). X and Y are the unique horizontal and vertical spaces that you've established.
Lay the picture virtual wainscoting frames against the wall where you expect to install them to ensure that they meet your 'quality standards'. If everything looks reasonable begin the installation.

Use a measuring tape to mark the location of the beginning of the first picture frame on the wall. If all of the spaces are equal them simply utilize the spacer block. Place the top part of the picture frame underneath the chair rail. Set the appropriate horizontal spacing and level by using the spacer block. Secure the frame position by driving one nail in the upper left and right hand corners of the picture frame I've played around with gluing and all sorts of other methods for securing the virtual wainscoting frames to the walls and found that a simple nail in each corner works great and it isn't a hassle to take it down if you someday decide you want a different virtual wainscoting frame look. Also, if you plan on caulking or painting the virtual wainscoting frame both act as additional adhesive.

Once the support nails are installed. Ensure the sides of the virtual wainscoting frames are square by using a level. secure the base of the picture frame by driving two nails into the lower left and right hand corners of the frame.
Feel free to apply additional nails as needed if you notice any bowing or gaps around the virtual wainscoting frames. Complete the installation of the remaining virtual wainscoting frames.
